The horse industry in Australia is a key employer of people in both urban and regional centres. The contribution of the horse to the Australian economy has been estimated to be more than $6 billion annually, yet there has been very little done to objectively derive production statistics for this industry.
This research project was funded to establish a computer based surveillance system to provide these data to the horse industry. This report summarises the first three years of this project and presents the data on the incidence, prevalence and cost of some common diseases of horses. In addition, there is considerable data on the reproductive efficiency of the Thoroughbred breeding industry and some discussion of the common causes
of death of horses in Australia.
This RIRDC research will be of benefit to horse breeders, veterinarians and equine science researchers alike as it provides an objective data set against which these groups can benchmark their efforts.
