Description

Aquaculture of both marine and freshwater fishes and crustaceans comprises one of the fastest growing food production systems in the world. Various factors have contributed to this growth. Among these are improved aquafeed formulations and nutritional information, superior feed conversion ratios, availability of aquafeed ingredients, improved farm management practices, success of more intensive culture systems and improved productivity in terms of decreased growing time and increased number of harvests per year. The global demonstration of economically successful aquaculture operations certainly has been a strong motivating force in the acceleration of fish and crustacean farming. Such rapid growth, estimated at 510% yearly, can be attributed in part to a gradual, but significant, decline in natural fisheries stocks. Many of these have reached or exceeded their maximal sustainable yield.
