Claws & Paws in Crisis - 2002
Post Graduate Foundation in Veterinary Science, University of Sydney.
These are the proceedings from the Claws and Paws in Crisis course, held in mid-September 2002 on the Gold Coast. It contains sections from the six speakers who contributed at this Valentine Charlton Refresher Course, an event that many veterinarians missed out due to very high demand for places. The course focused on emergency medicine of cats and dogs and general feline medicine. This book is fully indexed allowing for an easier search for information. This course was very well received by those who attended and the proceedings equally appreciated and are available for purchase.
Dr Andy Sparkes has written excellent reviews of many topical subjects in feline medicine, including renal failure, respiratory and endocrine disorders, nutritional support of the anorexic cat, vaccination, zoonotic diseases and several infectious diseases (coronavirus and FIP, dermatophytosis, retroviruses and bartonellosis.) He has also provided a very informative chapter on the immunology and molecular biology behind many of the diagnostic tests currently used in veterinary practice.
The section by Dr Ken Drobatz of the University of Pennsylvania contains useful information on managing the trauma patient, including the diagnostic approach and management of the acute abdomen, traumatic thoracic injury and respiratory distress. Dr Brad Gavaghan contributed a section on managing feline cardiomyopathy, and Dr Vic Menrath shares his experiences with kidney transplantation in cats. The latest developments in managing tick paralysis in dogs and cats are also included, reviewed in a chapter by Drs Fiona Campbell and Rick Atwell. Finally, Dr Terry King has written timely updates on canine neural angiostrongylosis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome and necrotising fasciitis.
