Summary
The previous report by Underwood and Southwood (2008)
describes the development of immune mediated haemolytic
anaemia (IMHA) in an adult horse during a complicated
recovery from colic surgery. As is evident in this report, both
diagnostic evaluation and management of anaemia can be
quite challenging in the post operative colic patient. A number
of factors can contribute to the development of anaemia
following gastrointestinal surgery, including: 1) blood loss due
to intra- and/or post operative haemorrhage; 2) haemolysis
induced by the primary disease, therapeutic interventions,
and/or post operative complications; and/or 3) impaired
erythropoiesis. It is not unusual for multiple factors to
simultaneously contribute to anaemia in the post operative
patient, further complicating diagnosis and management.
