Gastric ulceration in the mature horse: a review
J. ORSINI
EQUINE VETERINARY EDUCATION
Equine vet. Educ. (2000) 12 (1) 24-27
Introduction
Gastric ulceration is a common disorder in mature horses.
Horses that are turned out to pasture and are not involved
in work have normal stomachs, as do most horses used for
light work or pleasure (Murray 1994). However, studies
have shown that racing horses and horses in race
training have a high prevalence of gastric ulcers, with
estimates ranging from 66% (Hammond et al. 1986) to over
90% (Murray 1994; J. Orsini, unpublished data). Horses
used for pleasure, riding lessons, or show have a lower
prevalence (37%) and severity of ulcers (Murray et al. 1989)
