Lymphoid Leukemia in Dog - Etiology and Classification
Chavhan SG., Rahane SD.
IPJ-Online. 2011; 3(2): 33-43
Abstract
Lymphoid leukemias are malignant neoplasms of lymphocytes originating primarily in the bone
marrow. Lymphoid leukemias include both acute Lymphoid/Lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and
chronic Lymphoid/Lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Both forms are considered uncommon and may
mimic more common diseases, such as lymphoma or chronic ehrlichiosis. Therefore, lymphoid
leukemias can sometimes be difficult to diagnose. Newer techniques, such as immunophenotyping
and assessment of clonality by polymerase chain reaction testing, have been developed to aid in the
diagnosis of lymphoid leukemia. For accurate diagnosis of type of lymphoid leukemia involved, the
clinician should have detailed knowledge of classification of these neoplasms. So, the present article
reviews the etiology and classification of lymphoid leukemias in detail.
