The Topographical Anatomy of the Horse contains over 250 separate diagrams and plates, each numbered and provided with explanatory captions; additional information to aid interpretation is given in the text.
The basic appearance of the horse is given by means of "points" shown from several different angles. The bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments which provide the anatomical basis for these superficial points are discussed in detail, with emphasis throughout on those structures which can be seen or felt from the surface of the body.
A number of plates show the components of the digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems, as well as the nerves and blood vessels. Particular attention is given to the structure of the head, with emphasis on the nasal cavity, teeth, larynx, and air sacs. The structure of the limbs, especially the hoof, is also illustrated in detail, and reference is made to injuries and diseases which may result in abnormal conformation.
The wealth of information contained in this book will be of great interest and value to students of veterinary science and equine science, owners, riders and breeders, in fact to anyone wishing to learn more about the structure of the horse and what makes it one of the most beautiful of animals.
Dr Peter Goody lectured for many years on veterinary anatomy at the Royal Veterinary College in London. He is also the author of Topographical Anatomy of the Dog.
