That horse bit me: zoonotic infections of equines to consider after exposure through the bite or the oral/nasal secretions

Millions of individuals are in contact with horses through occupational or recreational activities and I can imagine all of us, as vets, we've been bitten by a wide range of animal species.
However, when people talk about animal bites, they usually think about dogs and cats. But horses can and do bite, as well.
Although various types of traumatic injuries related to direct contact with horses are well described, roughly 3% to 4.5% of all reported injuries are due to bites by equines.
Most horse bites are probably playful nips that hurt a little yet don't cause major problems, but some bites can cause serious injuries and infections can result.
