The Dictionary of Virology
by Brian Mahy
Pages: 520
Publisher: Academic Press
Edition: 4th., 2008.
Language: English
ISBN: 978-0123737328
Format: PDF
Size: 2 MB
Description
Virology forms a link between science and medicine, and between disciplines such as microbiology and molecular biology. Rapid progress in the field has been accompanied by similar developments in the technical vocabulary, which is now extremely diverse, often confusing, and yet critical for useful discussion of the field. The second edition of A Dictionary of Virology will satisfy the needs of any biologist, clinician, research worker, medical or veterinary virologist, health practitioner or teacher who requires easy reference to current virological usage.
The second edition has been completely revised and updated to provide a succinct but comprehensive description of every virus affecting vertebrate species, from humans to fish. The entries include classification according to the latest (6th) ICTV report, and describe virus structure, replication and role in disease, as well as control or prevention measures. Nearly 3500 entries include commonly used cell lines, and explanations of terms applicable in molecular biology as related to viruses. References to antiviral drugs used clinically or experimentally, and numerous anecdotal facts that would be difficult to find by searching textbooks or other literature on medical or veterinary virology, make this a necessary resource at all times.
Each entry is listed alphabetically, and where appropriate, references to key journal articles or reviews are provided for further reading. Admirably up to date, all common terms used in virology are clearly explained.
The dictionary will serve equally as a handy reference, a companion to other reference texts, or a spelling and fact checker for students, research scientists and those engaged in ancillary activities such as science journalists, and the curious lay reader.
